MeasurementMass: The amount of matter that is in an object. This is not the same thing as weight! Your weight changes on different planets, your mass remains the same. The units for mass are grams and it is measured on a triple beam balance or electric balance. Length: The distance between two points or how long an object is. This is measured using a metric ruler or meter stick. The units for length or distance is meters. Volume: The volume of a liquid is measured using a graduated cylinder. You can find the volume of a regular solid by multiplying length times width times height. To find the volume of an irregular solid one must use the water displacement method. Temperature: Temperature is measured using a thermometer. We will measure temperatures in degrees Centigrade or Celsius. Important temperatures to remember include the freezing point of water, 0 degrees C, the boiling point of water, 100 degrees C, and normal body temperature, 37 degrees C The Metric SystemScientists need a standardized way of measuring things. This means that all scientists in the world measure things the same way using the same units. It is sort of like everyone speaking the same language. This is critical when scientists from different parts of the world share what they have learned particularly when the build upon each other’s work. The Metric System is the Standardized way of measuring things in science. It is a very easy system to use that works off units of ten (10). As scientists we will use the Metric System rather then the English system of measurement that the United States uses. The good news for science class is that the metric system makes conversions sooooo much easier to understand! In the metric system everything is converted by moving the decimal point to the left or to the right. I use the acronym Kim Helped David Until David Could Multiply to help remember.
Welcome all 2018-2019 living environment students and parents. I will be updating this page regularly throughout the year with course content, resourceful resources and even occasional extra credit for those that check the website regularly. Homework will be posted on the calendar on the home screen of my website by the end of 9th period daily. I have also set up remind accounts for each class to help students to stay organized as well as to help parents keep up with what is going on in school. I will be available for extra help every Thursday 9th period unless otherwise stated and am also available to stay after other days upon request. I will keep parent portal up to date at the end of every week. I hope to make this a fun, exciting and enjoyable year. If at any point you have questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]
