The Father of Genetics
•Gregor Mendel was a Monk from Austria. He was the first person to study the passage of traits from one generation to the next using pea plants
•He did not have any understanding of the nucleus, chromosomes, genes or DNA (they were not discovered yet!)
•He studied contrasting traits in pea plants
•He kept careful notes

Mendel's Conclusions 1.Each trait is caused by a pair of “factors” (genes) 2.“Factors” are inherited from parents during reproduction 3.Each trait is controlled by alternate forms (ex. Height: tall or short) 4.One form of the trait is dominant over the other recessive trait (ex. Tall is dominant over short in pea plants) |
